Chelsea Women are certainly continuing the strength they found under Emma Hayes with summer appointment Sonia Bompastor, with a comfortable 6-1 win over Twente on Tuesday night maintaining the Blues' 100% start to the season.
This extends further than that, however, with Chelsea winning every game in all competitions since their 4-3 loss to Liverpool in the 23/24 league campaign at the beginning of May.
One of only three losses inflicted upon Chelsea in the WSL that season, with the other two being victories for Arsenal and Manchester City, the strong start to the current campaign suggests that Bompastor has hopes to better this in her first season in charge.
Victorious against all three teams that tarnished their league record last season, with a combined seven goals scored compared to just one conceded, is certainly an indicator of the continued growth of the side.
And this isn’t just domestically, but their Champions League record so far this season is also perfect, having won five from five, sitting three points clear at the top of Group B.
So, in flying form, it asks a question about how long they can keep this going. No doubt a long way off Arsenal’s incredible 108-game unbeaten run in the 2000s, but that winning mentality is certainly there.
Their most recent WSL fixture against Brighton saw mistakes in which the Seagulls were able to score twice and threaten to get back into the game despite going two goals down.
A clear indication at surface level that the team have minor weaknesses, but it also proves that they can win fixtures and manage games even if they are not putting on the best showing, a crucial factor if they are to extend their winning streak. With two games left as 2024 nears an end, they have a strong chance to continue this into the new year.
A fixture against Real Madrid on the 17th looms as the Blues attempt to make it a full house of points in Europe. Putting up a fight last time in a 3-2 loss for the Spanish side, a win this time around would leave them level on points with the current WSL Champions in the Group.
Before this, a final league fixture of 2024 takes place against a struggling Leicester City, who have only scored five points from nine games this season. Bompastor, who has already made the best WSL coaching start in history, will be in search of another record at the King Power Stadium.
A win for the Blues would mean that they become the first team in the WSL era to win their first ten fixtures in a season. They currently equal Arsenal’s nine wins in a row at the start of the 2018-19 season.
The Foxes sit close to the other end of the table, with Chelsea no doubt favourites in this fixture. Lacking in front of goal this season, Leicester have not gotten on the scoresheet in seven of their nine league fixtures so far this campaign, and Chelsea’s scorelines certainly indicate that they will be looking to capitalise on any chances created.
Having shown their strength against the top teams so far this campaign, Chelsea certainly look set to take home a sixth consecutive domestic title, but Bompastor will also have her eyes on the European trophy that she missed out on last season, as her Lyon side were second best to Barcelona.
With her incredible start to life at Chelsea, more of the same in 2025 is very much on the cards, as it seems that even the top sides can’t take points away from the Champions. To keep this going, with games not only in the league and in Europe but also in domestic cup competitions as well, would be a huge testament to Chelsea’s talents.
No doubt strong contenders to win every trophy available to them, but to do so with a 100% record would elevate the achievement, and cement Bompastor's name in the club's history.
