Co-hosts Australia advance to Quarter Finals

An impressive Australia saw off Denmark to reach the Quarter Final stage at their home World Cup.

A goal in each half from Foord and Raso meant the Aussies accomplished a two-nil victory over the Danes.

The home favourites started off the better of the two sides in Sydney as a colosseum of green and gold encircled the pitch.

Despite having a lot of the early possession, nerves were evident within the Aussie side.

And it was Denmark who created the first couple of openings in the first quarter of an hour.

Forward Pernille Harder created herself an angle for a shot on goal but it was tame and straight at Arnold in the Aussie goal.

But, against the run of play, it was the co-hosts that opened the scoring. After 28 minutes, Australia countered after a loose pass from Denmark gave the ball away.

Fowler played a wonderful through ball to set Caitlin Foord in down the left and she slotted underneath the legs of Christensen to send the crowd into frenzy.

It was clinical from the Australians who had been on the back foot but they punished Denmark for some sloppy passing.

Foord nearly found a second as her deflected effort looped just past the post but a goal kick was given by the referee, much to the dismay of Foord and her teammates.

Australia began to drop deeper and deeper in an attempt to defend their lead and they took their advantage into half time.

It was a quieter start to the second half in terms of final third quality. Denmark were looking for a route back into the game, trying to get Harder involved like she was in the beginning of the contest. Australia seemed resolute in defense, knowing how huge a result it would be if they could hang on.

And just over halfway through the second half, the game was sealed as the Aussies doubled their lead.

A fine passing move resulted in Van Egmond laying it off to Hayley Raso who fired into the bottom left hand corner from 8 yards out.

The hosts now had a comfortable lead to defend and Denmark were failing to offer much threat in front of goal.

Denmark pushed for a goal back to make the final stages interesting but were unable to force Arnold into any sort of save and they eventually ran out of time.

The game finished 2-0 and means Australia will now face either France or Morocco in the last eight.
