England v Iceland: a game where a team ranked number 4 in the world played a team ranked 72 in the world. Theoretically, it should have been a good win for the home side England. However Iceland came out on top, like they have done previously.
With a loss before the Euro 2024 tournament this Summer, how does this leave the England team feeling and how does this leave their fans feeling?
At the home of England football, Wembley stadium, England lost 1-0 to opposition Iceland for their final friendly leading up to the European Championships 2024. Previously England has beaten Iceland however they have also been defeated by them on occasion such as the UEFA Nations League in 2020 and in Euro 2016.
With such a significant gap between the rankings of each team Iceland showed that for this game they were the better side. They passed through the England players like it was nothing and created space where England could not. In the 12th minute Iceland's Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson scored past keeper Aaron Ramsdale leaving England behind.
As a whole, England's performance on this occasion was poor. The team had very little time in the box with only one shot on target. In the second half of the game, the fans were losing hope and had lost the attention of the game. The fan made ticket paper airplanes became much more entertaining and drew in more cheers than the players themselves. When it came to the end of the game, fans began leaving before the final whistle has blown, this being a indicated of the feelings and confidence people has in their home side.
With the team picked out for the Euors the questions have been sparked about those who have not been chosen and whether or not they should have been. Could this game have proved many England fans right?
