After being one of the favourites to lift the trophy, they will be more than disappointed knowing they didn’t even make it out the group. With just two points and a negative goal difference, Chris Hughton's side have disappointed their supporters in the Ivory Coast.
With their group consisting of, Egypt, Mozambique and Cape Verde, they would have believed it would be a relatively easy ride for them to qualify for the knockouts. But that wasn’t the case with a loss to Cape Verde and draws with the Egyptians and Mozambique, the Ghanaians bow out after just three matches.
The Ghanaian team consists of in form Mohammed Kudus, Inaki Williams, Jordan Ayew, Mohammed Salisu and Andre Ayew and many other experienced and quality professionals.
The way the Ghanaian media reacted after Monday’s draw shows just how big of a shock it has come to the nation, with journalists even following the players and back room team all the way onto the coach after the game. They were also asking for the manager Chris Hughton to be sacked immediately, which happened just a few hours after the draw with Mozambique.
On Monday night, the Ghanaians were 2-0 up in the 90th minute but after two injury-time goals the game ended in a draw. With the Egyptians drawing against Cape Verde, a win for Ghana would have put them second and would have qualified them for the knockouts but that wasn’t the case.
The four time AFCON champions had their fate confirmed by the other results yesterday, with Ivory Coast, Namibia, Mauritania & Guinea taking the third place spots in the knock-out stages. Ghana, along with Zambia, crashed out.
Now that Ghana are pretty much out, who do you believe will win the competition?
