Is Harry Kane an Underappreciated Talent?

Writer: James BarnesJames Barnes

Since solidifying his spot in the Spurs starting XI in 2014, Harry Kane has been one of the most prolific goalscorers the sport has seen. Despite this however, his achievements seem to go under the radar for one reason or the other.

Kane has been nothing short of exceptional whether he was wearing the white and navy blue of North London or the Bavarian colours in Munich. Kane has failed to score 20 goals in a league season only twice in his entire career.

He managed 17 goals in an injury-riddled season in 2018/2019, in which he was sidelined with injuries on two different occasions that season. He also managed only 17 goals in the 2021/2022 season, despite playing all but one game in what seemed at the time a very turbulent time at Spurs.

All of this greatness that Kane has showed however has always been undervalued by other incredible seasons of other elite attacking talents. For example, Kane scored 30 goals in just 37 games in 2017/2018, however, this was the season where Mo Salah officially made himself a superstar by scoring 32 goals and registering 10 assists, with no one truly acknowledging what was Kane's best goalscoring season to date.

Additionally, Kane broke the 30-goal barrier in the Premier League again in 2022/2023, scoring 30 once again in what was his last season with Tottenham.

Despite this incredible season from Kane, Erling Haaland torched and dismantled defences like we had never seen before, scoring 36 goals in 35 league games.

Moreover, Kane's first season at Bayern was dominated by the undefeated invincibles that were Xabi Alonso's Bayern Leverkusen team who pipped Bayern to win the Bundesliga, despite Kane scoring 36 goals in 32 games that season for the Bavarians.

Kane's biggest curse and what makes people not consider him in the branch of elite forwards is his level of play in finals.

Kane has appeared in six cup finals in his career, including Spurs, England and Bayern Munich. He has lost all of them.

Not only has he lost all of these games, he has not registered a single goal in any of these games which has led to fans and pundits questioning if he is a big game player.

Kane's dominance and consistency came at a time of playing for Tottenham too; this is far more impressive than delivering these stats in a title-contending team.

As a result, Kane's ridiculous run of consistent goalscoring success in the Premier League went under the radar at times due to his team never really being dominant including his European Golden Shoe win.

Kane even broke an Alan Shearer record in scoring 39 Premier League goals in a calendar year back in 2017. In that time, other elite strikers, such as Luis Suarez for Barcelona and Robert Lewandowski for Bayern Munich were reaching the deep stages of the Champions League and producing goals at around a similar rate to Kane, with both Suarez and Lewandowski winning European Football's biggest prize.

With Bayern Munich currently six points clear at the top of the Bundesliga and Kane contributing to it by scoring 22 goals in 25 Bundesliga games played, it looks like Kane may finally be winning his first title in his professional career.

Despite this, England's record goalscorer may still be undermined when it comes to true greats through his trophy cabinet being empty and eluding his otherwise remarkable professional career thus far.
