On Wednesday afternoon, The Lionesses World Cup Squad was announced.
The Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand starts on the 20th July this Summer. Sarina Wiegman has finally released her 23 women squad for the major football competition at the end of next month, and some fans are shocked with some of Wiegman’s decisions.
The Lionesses squad for the Women’s World Cup is:
Goalkeepers: Mary Earps, Hannah Hampton, Ellie Roebuck
Defenders: Millie Bright, Lucy Bronze, Jess Carter, Niamh Charles, Alex Greenwood, Esme Morgan, Lotte Wubben-Moy
Midfielders: Laura Coombs, Jordan Nobbs, Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone, Keira Walsh, Katie Zelem
Forwards: Rachel Daly, Bethany England, Lauren Hemp, Lauren James, Chloe Kelly, Katie Robinson, Alessia Russo
One major concern for The Lionesses was, who will be announced captain for the Summer World Cup, due to Leah Williamson getting stretchered off against Manchester United back in April. Sarina Wiegman has decided to appoint Millie Bright as the new captain for this tournament in July. Bright was fan favourite to be captaining the side at the World Cup due her excellence international experience for England, at 66 caps and due to the fact that she played alongside Williamson at the 2022 Euros. Although she was favourite to captain England at the World Cup, she has been ruled out of football for the past several weeks now, however she will make her return for the World Cup and will be leading the side out to potential victory.
Two fan upsets are, both Maya Le Tissier and Jessica Park missing out on the World Cup squad. Le Tissier and Park both featured in the Finalissima squad however, sadly didn't make the cut for the final 23 for the Wold Cup next month. Jesica Park joined Manchester City back in 2017 still remains there. However in the 2022/23 season, she went on loan to Everton FC. During her season there she scored 5 goals and was nominated for January player of the month. Some are surprised as to why she did not get selected for The World Cup Squad, despite the brilliant season she has had.
Sarina Wiegman's squad selection brings exciting news to both Esme Morgan and Katie Zelem, who have both been selected for the tournament. Esme Morgan is a 22 year-old defender for Manchester City and has had a fantastic season for City, making 23 appearances for her club. Furthermore, Katie Zelem was a surprise selection as she didn't make the Finalissima squad back in April, however has been selected for the World Cup Squad. The Manchester United midfielder has made 30 appearances and scored 3 goals for United this season, being an influential part to the Red Devils this season.
Exciting news for Jordan Nobbs as she makes her England return! Sarina Wiegman gave her the call up after her impressive spell at Aston Villa. She signed for Villa from Arsenal during the January transfer window and has shown why she deserves to wear the England shirt in Australia and New Zealand next month, scoring 4 goals in 15 appearances for the club.
The question now is, how far can this England team progress in the World Cup and can they win it?
