Southampton's 25 games unbeaten streak comes to end as they lost 3-1 to Bristol City on Tuesday evening.
The Saints travelled to Ashton Gate on Tuesday evening to face 13th place Bristol City. Southampton hadn't lost a game since 23rd September 2022, where they lost 2-1 to Middlesborough. They were aiming to get all three points to put them back into second place in the Championship, due to Leeds beating Swansea City 4-0.
Southampton's 22 game unbeaten league streak was the 4th longest in Championship history, winning 16 and drawing 6. They had won their last 6 since out of 7 games, scoring 22 goals in 7 games. The Saints have won their last two head-to-heads against Bristol City, winning 2-0 back in September of 2013, and 1-0 in November 2023.
Bristol City were going into the game confident after beating Middlesborough 2-1 at the weekend, and after putting an excellent performance against Nottingham Forrest last week in the FA Cup 4th round. 5 changes were made for The Robins since their 2-1 victory at the weekend, including Tommy Conway returning to the starting eleven.
The game got off to a slow start with not many chances created in the first half an hour, as it ended 0-0 at half time. In the first half, Southampton had 2 out of 10 shots on target, whereas Bristol City had 1 out of 8 shots on target. However it was the second 45 minutes were the game started to come alive. Number 20, Sam Bell, had a slow first half however, came out of the traps in the second half. Anis Mehmeti played across the 6-yard box for Sam Bell to be able to knock it home, sending The Robins into the lead.
Central defender, Rob Dickie, made it two, from a thomping header into the bottom left-hand corner, from a fantastic corner delivered by Joe Williams. The goals kept coming as Harry Cornick made it three following a fast break from Ross McCrorie.
Southampton managed to claw one back from the spot, after Harry Cornick gave away the penalty. However it was too late for The Saints to salvage any points, and Bristol City took home all 3.
Bristol City now look ahead to their next game against QPR at Ashton Gate at the weekend. Southampton are hoping to bounce back from this all get some points against 5th place West Brom at The Hawthorns.
