The Barclay’s Women’s Championship is back!

This weekend saw the first games in the Championship- the second tier of Women’s Football in England! From Sunderland to Southampton, and everything in between, there was a great display of football on show.

Day one saw Charlton take the top spot, by securing the three points following a 2-0 win over Southampton. Despite The Saints more threatening attack in the opening minutes, Emily Simpkins gave Charlton the advantage following a successful penalty in the 22nd minute. The starting moments of the second half revealed a similar pattern of Southampton looking very strong, however in the 52nd minute, Mel Johnson’s left boot found the net.

Palace gained the three points over London City, in a 1-0 victory, after Isabella Sibley slotted the ball past the keeper. A level playing field was witnessed at the Maiden Castle Sports Park, with a 1-1 draw between Durham and Sunderland. Both goals came in the first quarter of the game, with Saorise Noonan’s header, shortly being cancelled out by Brianna Westrup’s strike at the opposing end.

Blackburn Rovers and Bristol City were successful in their games against Sheffield United and Coventry United, leaving the field with a 1-0 win. Saffron Jordan helped the Rovers, whilst the Robins were successful due to Jessica Woolley’s strike at goal.

Birmingham City and Lewes concluded the weekend with a 0-0 draw.

The foundation for this season has been set, but with 21 match days still to go, all is to play for!
