Tottenham Hotspur: Scintillating Attack Hindered by Set-piece Woes

Coming out of the decisive victory against Aston Villa, Tottenham are now the highest scorers in the Premier League, having scored 22 goals so far in their opening 10 games of the season. However, despite this, they have only kept two cleansheets in those ten games.

Particularly, in Sunday's game, Tottenham were caught out in a set piece situation which they have had happen to them consistently throughout this season.

The same issue with set pieces has included close losses in crucial games, such as the agonising 1-0 loss at home to their North London rivals Arsenal. They lost the game with the only goal of the game coming from a corner by Arsenal headed home by Gabriel.

Set-pieces has proven to be the achilles heel for the team since Postecoglou came in. Whilst Arsenal's height advantage could be forgiven for conceding that set-piece, the one against Aston Villa can not be given as much leeway.

Villa's only goal in the game came as Vicario parried away a headed attempt in the box. The issue arises as no Tottenham player reacts to the loose ball in their own box as quickly as they should have reacted to it, thus allowing Morgan Rogers to tap the ball into an empty net.

As of the North Lodon Derby game in Setpember, Spurs had conceded 13 goals from corners in their last 22 games according to the BBC. These goals have been costly to Spurs, especially when they were trying to push pressure onto Aston Villa for an elusive 4th placed finish.

However, Tottenham's electric attack once again saved them from having back-to-back defeats in the league.

Spurs are currently 7th in the Premier League, however they are only three points away from 3rd placed Nottingham Forest.

With the team having the second best goal difference in the league behind leaders Liverpool, they seemingly just need to sharpen their defensive edge in one area if they want to start to build momentum once again and be considered a serious team and potential threat near the top of the Premier League.
