Woking had a night to forget as they were convincingly beaten by Eastleigh in the Isuzu FA Trophy Third Round. Two first-half goals for The Spitfires were enough, as they will now face Braintree Town in the next round.
Ryan Hill had the visitors’ first chance when he laid the ball off to former Woking academy graduate Charlie Carter, but his shot was deflected over the bar.
Eastleigh took the lead from a move that was built on quick passing and saw Hill play in JJ McKiernan who fired his shot into the bottom corner. Bad start for the home side, just six minutes in.
Rhys Browne had The Cards first sight of goals when he went through on goal, but his effort was saved well by the 'keeper.
Just a minute later, Danny Whitehall was brought down in the Woking penalty area after a counter-attacking move and the referee pointed to the spot. Whitehall stepped up and placedhis penalty into the bottom right-hand corner.
Before the break, Kyran Lofthouse had a crack at goal with a powerful shot, but it was held well by Joe McDonnell.
HT: 0-2
In the second half, Carter managed to rattle the foot of the post with a driven effort and then Alfie Lloyd subsequently placed his attempt just wide from the rebound.
Substitute Tyreke Johnson nearly got one back for his side, but Brennan Camp saw out the danger to keep a clean sheet for his side.
Hill was involved in the action once more after a great counter-attacking move ended in him hitting the crossbar from just inside the box.
FT: 0-2
A really poor display from the joint record competition winners, who will have to wait another year to add a fourth FA trophy to the cabinet. Charlie O’Connell looked out of depth at centre-back and will likely not be seen in that position again going forward. The lack of creativity was the most damaging part of tonight, with this side’s main strength being getting forward.
This wasn’t what a Darren Sarll team tends to look like and so hopefully it will be fixed quickly, before the massive derby day fixtures against hated rivals Aldershot Town in the traditional back-to-back Boxing Day and New Year’s Day games. #COYCards
